What Exactly Are Sub-Ohm Salts

By now, most, if not all vapers are familiar with the concept of salt-based nicotine. After all, it’s taken the vaping community by storm within just a couple of years. As we know, salt-based nicotine is extremely potent yet refreshingly smooth, which makes it ideal for the portion of the vaping community that desires nothing more than the ability to satisfy their nicotine cravings without relying on analogs.

Due to the enormous popularity of nicotine salts, it’s no surprise that the industry has developed many innovations over the last couple of years that have allowed us to enjoy this type of nicotine in a wide variety of ways. Today, we’ll be talking about one of the most exciting innovations yet, sub-ohm salts.

Salt Nic vs. Freebase Nic

Before we get into what sub-ohm salts are, we have to explain the difference between salt nic and freebase nic. Freebase nic, also known as freebase nicotine or traditional nicotine, is a type of nicotine that is chemically modified to be more potent. It was first used by major tobacco companies decades ago, and for a while, it was the only type of nicotine available for the vaping industry. The issue is that freebase nic can be quite harsh when it is present in high concentrations or vaped at high output levels. This is why the concentrations found in traditional sub-ohm vape juices are pretty low.

Now, we have salt-based nicotine, also known as nicotine salts or salt nic. This is a newly developed type of nicotine that takes the nicotine compounds from the tobacco plant and isolates them from all of the other compounds found in the plant. Then, it combines this nicotine with benzoic acid, which allows for a smoother experience without taking away from its potency. This lets vapers enjoy higher nicotine concentrations without experiencing any harshness.

Up until now, salt-based nicotine was associated with the usage of pod mod systems. These systems utilize salt nic e-liquid which has a high nicotine concentration for users who desire a highly potent nicotine experience. Pod systems are low-wattage devices that are extremely small, and most of them are not nearly as customizable as the box mod setups that most of us are used to.

Sub-Ohm Salts: A New Way to Enjoy Salt-Based Nicotine

So, now you know the difference between salt nic and freebase nic. Now, let’s explain sub-ohm salts, and what makes this innovation so exciting for vapers. Like we said, up until now, vapers could not enjoy salt-based nicotine unless they were using a pod mod system. Of course, this was considered very limiting among vapers who desired more robust, technologically advanced and versatile vaping setups, and the sub-ohm style of vaping that allows for big, fluffy clouds that so many vapers find extremely appealing.

Now that we have sub-ohm salts, users can essentially enjoy the best of both worlds. They can continue using their sub-ohm systems that provide those big clouds and lots of customizable options, while also getting a nice dose of salt-based nicotine with every puff.

Lower Concentrations for Smoother Hits and Moderate Potency

The thing about sub-ohm salts is that they come in lower nicotine strengths than the salt nic vape juices that are used with pod mod devices. While salt nic e-liquid for pod mod systems typically has a concentration of 50mg, sub-ohm salts tend to come in 3mg and 6mg. That’s because the very high wattage levels of sub-ohm devices could burn the salt-based nicotine.

However, because of that low concentration, vapers can still get a decent potency level, as well as an extremely smooth inhale. Because of the benzoic acid in salt-based nicotine, each draw feels velvety smooth as it goes down the throat.

Stronger Throat Hit

Another bonus of sub-ohm salts is that it provides a stronger hit to the back of the throat, which many users find very desirable. This sensation is reminiscent to that of smoking a real cigarette, which is why former smokers tend to crave that throat hit that salt-based nicotine can provide.

Bolder Flavor

Additionally, many users of sub-ohm salts report that they taste a stronger, bolder and richer flavor thanks to the way in which salt-based nicotine interacts with the flavor molecules in their vape juice. And, honestly, who doesn’t want to enjoy more flavor while they vape?
